Florence S. Craig Fine Art
Hello and welcome to my artistic world! I am a young Minnesota artist with a passion for all things nature, life, and light, and with a deep desire to spread hope and love.
I draw from my dual degrees in Studio Art and Art History to infuse my work with echoes of different artistic eras, creating a symphony of the old and the new. I am particularly inspired by East Asian watercolor painting, Medieval manuscript illumination, global calligraphy traditions, Gothic stained glass, and botanical illustration.
I work primarily in transparent watercolor because I am in love with the wildness of this unique medium. Watercolor is notoriously difficult to control—a fact that makes it especially appealing to me. The art of watercolor painting is like an exhilarating dance. There’s no erasing, no “painting over it”—if you try to control it, it will fight you right back, and trust me, watercolor wins every time. If you dance with it, embrace its untamable essence, it will reward you with a life, spirit, and illumination utterly unmatched by any other medium.
Through it all, my dear husband James has been my biggest supporter and source of stability and inspiration.
His surprise gift of a professional art printer enabled me to launch a line of printed cards, he partners with me to build beautiful custom picture frames for my paintings, and he helps me with technology that facilitates creation. His excellent sense of design is invaluable to me in inspiring me to try new things, and he consistently encourages me to keep pursuing art, even when that means taking a family income-cut.
His faithful love regularly weaves its way into my artwork, and I consider myself the luckiest woman alive to be married to such an indescribably precious human.
Faith is my anchor, and it the vast majority of my work could be described as a kind of visual prayer. Through my art, I explore the profound connections between faith and the human experience, inviting viewers to reflect and connect with their own journey.
The theme that pervades nearly all my work is “Beauty from Ashes”—a promise drawn from Scripture, and my raison d’être. My personal experience with trauma, healing, and faith has inspired both my artistic work and my desire to spread hope and love in all aspects of life.
Thank you for stopping by! I hope that you find something here that brings you hope today.
